William Relton is currently playing the Haushofmeister (AKA the Major Domo) in Ariadne auf Naxos for Glyndebourne Festival 2026.

William’s varied theatrical career began in London’s West End playing the title role in Rattigan’s The Winslow Boy in 1971. Major West End stage roles include Cherubin in Beaumarchais’s The Marriage of Figaro, Kenneth in Berlin’s Call Me Madam and Ralph Rackstraw in HMS Pinafore. 

Elsewhere, William has performed the title role in Bernstein’s Candide, Tony in West Side Story, Marco in Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Gondoliers, the title role in Hamlet at Nottingnham Playhouse and Wilfred Owen in the one-man play All the Arts of Hurting. He was also in the cast of the Regents’ Park Open Air Theatre’s firt original musical in 1982, The Admirable Bashville.

On television, William’s credits include Clayhanger, Play for Today, The Lost Boys and Degrees of Error. Film appearances have included roles in Beauty and the Beast (1976) and Slumdog Millionaire (2008).

His roles on the operatic stage have included Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, Basilio in Le nozze di Figaro and Tisbe in La Cenorentola.
