After an extended period of development with VAULT festival, University of Lincoln, Papergang Theatre, Pleasance Theatre, MGCfutures, Centre 151, and Exchange Theatre Asian Pirate Musical is presenting the full production this July at Upstairs at the Gatehouse in Highgate.

We are delighted for Ashley Goh who has been part of the show for a while and who now gets to realise the role of Nazar in the World Premiere. Creating a role in a brand new musical is a dream for so many musical theatre performers and we are thrilled that Ashley has this opportunity to be part of this exciting new work.

As a performer Ashley has demonstrated their passion for new musical theatre writing and this is the second time that Ashley has created a role in a new musical and appeared in the World Premiere production, having previously originated the role of Alex in Babies.

Asian Pirate Musical is a devised musical featuring five seafaring Asian characters across three time periods, intertwining the lives of 14th century Muslim diplomat Zheng He, 19th century pirate queen Shih Yang, 21st century survivor Nazar and 24th century queer space revolutionaries Keliling and Riang.

The musical is part of a new movement in musical theatre writing that sees a collaboration of creatives coming together to write the book, music and lyrics in a non-heirachical creative team structure using an experimental blend of traditional indigenous sounds, 21st century Asian pop, and musical influence from diasporas.
